A jewelry store robbery involving pepper spray at Sunridge Mall Saturday led police to evacuate the building after the pepper spray spread through mall ventilation, hospitalizing one man.

Police responded to calls of a robbery at a jewelry store in the northeast Calgary mall around 1:30 p.m. They said suspects deployed pepper spray during the robbery, which got into vents and had a “drastic effect on a number of people” inside the mall.

The mall was evacuated as a precaution, police said, with the building still closed to the public as of 3 p.m. EMS and fire crews also attended the mall to assist with decontaminating the building.

Paramedics also assessed five adults who were in the mall, with four released at the scene. One man was transported to hospital in stable, non-life-threatening condition. EMS spokesperson Adam Loria said all five people were “in indirect contact with an unknown substance.”

The Calgary Police Service general investigations unit reviewed mall CCTV. Police believe at least two suspects were involved in the robbery, with the possibility that more offenders were involved. No suspects have been arrested.
