The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) says it was called to investigate on Tuesday after a Lethbridge police officer was seriously injured at the service’s firing rage.
The incident happened around 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday when one officer discharged a live round from a firearm into a table, according to a release from ASIRT.
Another officer was struck in the upper left leg by what investigators believe was a piece of the table. That blow resulted in a serious but non-life-threatening injury.
Officers provided medical aid to the injured officer, who remains in hospital in stable condition.
The discharged round has also been recovered from a wall.
ASIRT is now investigating the incident and says no further information will be released at this time.
ASIRT’s mandate is to investigate any incidents involving Alberta police that results in serious injury or death, as well as allegations of police misconduct.
