The victim was identified by the Sûreté du Québec on Sunday as Marcel Aubry of l’Épiphanie.

According to the SQ, the collision took place at about 2:45 p.m. on Route 335 in St-Calixte, about 50 km north of Montreal.

The motorcycle was heading northbound, driving “normally,” when a car heading southbound veered into his lane, said SQ spokesperson Claude Denis. The motorcyclist was unable to avoid the collision.

The driver of the car, a 48-year-old man, was arrested for driving with diminished capacity. He was taken to a police station, where he failed a breathalyzer test. He was released with a promise to appear in court.

Article content continued

“There’s bad seeds all over the place but there is a lot of really good people in Calgary and I do my damnedest to surround myself and reach out to them,” said May.

“Everyone has their trauma and their issues. I can only imagine the person who felt the need to act out towards us and towards me is coming from his own place of pain and trauma, but at the end of the day we need to just keep acting with kindness.”

Jeffries said she hopes the incident highlights how much work still needs to be done in Calgary to make it a welcoming city for all. She said she doesn’t feel safe in the city and has been the subject of anti-LGBTQ+ hate.

“I just want people to be aware that this literally happens every single day, everywhere,” she said.

“We were in the mid...

Thomas Sowell Goes to Bat for Charter Schools. Whiffs

X

Story Stream

recent articles

The successful teacher strikes of 2018-2019 led to limits on charter school expansion and put charters on the defensive. Now economist Thomas Sowell is leading the counterattack.

Conservatives are hailing Sowell’s new book, “Charter Schools and Their Enemies,” and wielding it as a club against teachers unions and public education. Kevin D. Williamson of National Review calls the book “a bloodbath for Sowell’s intellectual opponents … a neutron bomb in the middle of the school-reform debate.” Charter advocate Robert Pondiscio says charter school critics “have earned a metaphorical punch in the nose,” and that Sowell “provide[s] ammunition for the fight,” while predicting that his book will “embarrass charter critics.”

Horacio Arruda will earn nearly $1 million in his three-year contract

Article content continued

Since he became national health director in 2012, Arruda’s salary has increased by about 20 per cent.

In terms of hierarchy, Arruda is not at the top of the pyramid: Officially he occupies the position of assistant deputy minister of health — and yet, he earns substantially more than his immediate superior, deputy minister of health and social services Dominique Savoie. Appointed in June, she is paid $276,109 to head the largest government ministry — it has 10 assistant deputy ministers.

Savoie is paid significantly less than her predecessor, Yvan Gendron: He was paid $310,000, one of the highest salaries in Quebec’s public service.

Arruda’s compensation is nearly equivalent to that of the government’s highest-level public servant: Yves Ouellet, Secretar...

Canadiens had the matchups they wanted in Game 1 win over Penguins

Article content

TORONTO — As the Canadiens approached the start of their qualifying round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins, coach Claude Julien talked about the difficulty of matching lines because the Penguins had the last line change in the first two games of the best-of-five series.

As it turned out, his concerns were for naught.

Sidney Crosby spent most of the night playing against the Canadiens’ defensive specialist Phil Danault and young Nick Suzuki.

“I was a bit surprised,” said Danault, who was matched against Crosby for 19 faceoffs. “I know they double-shifted him a lot so I guess we were going to face each other.”

Crosby was on the ice for 30 shifts in the Penguins’ 3-2 overtime loss, but Danault also did some extra work...
